SSC CGL 2026 Vacancy Overview

As per the SSC CGL 2026 notification, approximately 12,256 tentative vacancies have been reported by various Indenting Ministries and Departments. These vacancies are provisional and may increase or decrease based on the requirements submitted by the respective departments during the recruitment process.

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) only conducts the examination and selection process. The final number of vacancies is determined entirely by the concerned User Departments and Ministries.

Assistant Audit Officer (AAO) and Assistant Accounts Officer vacancies have been included in this cycle with a pay scale of Rs. 47,600 – Rs. 1,51,100 (Pay Level 8) — one of the highest pay brackets available under SSC CGL.

Demand & Competition Analysis

SSC CGL remains one of the highest-demand government examinations in India due to its attractive salary structure, job security, career growth opportunities, and postings in prestigious Central Government departments.

Each year, approximately 30 to 50 lakh candidates register for the examination, while vacancies generally range between 7,000 and 18,000 posts (excluding the 2022 anomaly). As a result, the competition level remains extremely high.

However, the large applicant pool should not discourage serious aspirants. A significant percentage of registered candidates either do not appear for the examination or are inadequately prepared. The effective competition pool — candidates scoring consistently above 130 (UR category) — is roughly 10–15% of those who actually appear. Candidates who follow a structured preparation strategy and consistently score above expected cut-off levels have a realistic chance of securing selection.
